About us
We deliver our service across three departments in NHS Lothian to approximately 200,000 patients a year. We believe in clinical excellence, provided within a strong multidisciplinary team ethos and with patient care at its centre.
We are continually attempting to improve both our patients’ experience and that of our staff, and are constantly innovating with new methods, processes, and training.
The EDs
We deliver our service across three departments in NHS Lothian: The Royal Infirmary Edinburgh, The Royal Hospital for Sick Children and St Johns Hospital, Livingston.
Trauma
The Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh is one of Scotland's four Major Trauma Centres. We look after people with serious injuries from across the South-East of Scotland.
Nursing
Our Emergency Department nursing team sits at the heart of everything we do. Based in Edinburgh Scotland and proudly rooted in our community, we’re a fast-paced, highly skilled group who thrive in the organised chaos that only ED can deliver (and survive).
Our people
We believe in clinical excellence, provided within a strong multidisciplinary team ethos and with patient care at its centre.
Our history
It is difficult to pin down where the first emergency department in Edinburgh was, but in the 18th century with the growing numbers of industrial accidents many hospitals started to develop walk-in ‘casualty rooms’.
