Simulation Training 

The Emergency Department Simulation Team (EDSim) was set-up in August 2013 and is led by EM Consultants Dr Craig Walker and Dr Shirin Brady. The Faculty also includes Caroline Hughes (CN Educator), Suzi MacKenzie (Specialty Doctor), Dr Lyle Moncur and Dr Scott Clarke. 

We aim to further enhance the strong knowledge base and working relationships between our medical, nursing and ancillary teams through clinical skills and drills training along with medium- and high-fidelity simulations around potentially challenging clinical scenarios. 

Resus Fridays 

We provide once-weekly clinical skills and drills training in our Resuscitation Rooms in the Royal Infirmary from 7.45 to 8:15am. These are condensed, predominantly hands-on sessions and cover topics such as invasive lines, Non-invasive Ventilation (NIV), use of rapid infusion devices, chest drains, traction splints, cardiac arrest devices, airway management exercises and many, many others. These hands-on sessions, teach not only the theory behind each topic but training in how to use our equipment in the most effect ways possible.  

Topics will be covered more than once to enable members of each of the medical and nursing teams to participate. They are primarily aimed at the Resuscitation team on for that day but are also open to any other members of the ED Team who wish to join us, including medical and nursing students rotating through our department. 

Clinical Skills Day 

To further consolidate the skills learned during Resus Friday, we also run a skills day 2-3 times per year, with drop-in sessions for trauma skills, NIV, rapid infusion, managing maxillofacial haemorrhage and using the defibrillator. 

High-Fidelity Situation 

We run the regional Trauma Team Course 2-3 times per year. This is an interprofessional simulation course for all members of the Trauma Team from Anaesthetics, Critical Care, Emergency Medicine, Surgery, Orthopaedics and the Ambulance service. We also support our regional Registrar Teaching Programme and many of us teach on the National EM training days for thoracotomy, trauma and orthopaedics and cardiorespiratory skills. 

EM Registrar specific Simulation 

We host RSI and cardiac arrest simulations as part of Registrar induction at the RIE, and all EM trainees are required to undertake our locally designed Safe Sedation course – run by Dr Antonia Hazlerigg (Sedation Lead) and Dr Susie Roy (EM College Tutor RIE). 

Additional Simulation-based Activities 

In addition to the above, we run additional activities based on staff requests, departmental needs and educational development. These have included one-to-one intubation training, shoulder relocation techniques, ED tabletop exercises and, most recently, enhancing team management of cardiac arrests through novel simulation techniques including combinations of Rapid Cycle Deliberate Practice with gamification.  

The potential for our simulation training is huge. We have a tremendous opportunity to improve everything from our individual knowledge bases and practical skills to our team relationships and the very design of our Resuscitation areas, the equipment we use and how we use it.
