Association of the Study of Medical Education Conference
Mike Freeman

With the funding provided by Medic One, I was able to present a poster at the Association of the Study of Medical Education Conference in Belfast in July 2016. This is a 3 day international scientific conference on medical education which aims to support research-informed, best practice across the continuum of medical education

I presented data collected on a novel teaching programme that I had developed for Edinburgh medical students over the past year. This simulation teaching session on 'referrals' was delivered to final year medical students as part of their compulsory preparation for practice.

Making a clear and effective referral is a key aspect to the role of any doctor in ED and is something that many students reporting a lack of confidence and difficulty with upon starting as an FY1. The aim of this session was to improve confidence and ability at making an effective and safe referral.

Medical Education is a pivotal component to the day to day setup of emergency departments with new medical students and junior staff regularly rotating through the department. This conference gave me the opportunity to see some of the most innovative and exiting areas in medical education. I have organised the weekly Resus Friday teaching sessions in the RIE emergency department for the past 8 months and hope that the insights from this conference will help me to organise high quality and innovative teaching sessions for staff members in this department.

Thank you Medic one for the support with this project and attendance at this conference.
